HELICO Brickworks
A project. FINANCIAL BANK TCHAD was behind the setting up of the brickworks in 2002 with an investment of over 2 billion CFAF (€3 m.), which benefited at the start from refinancing by SFI (Société Financière Internationale – of the World Bank Group) and from the technical expertise of the Belgian company CERATEC.
The brickworks’ activity is to make bricks of baked clay in different formats for building work.
A 100% local product. These bricks in pure clay obtained locally and containing no sand have durability, load-bearing strength and thermal insulation properties superior to pre-cast concrete blocks (‘cinder blocks’) at an equivalent cost price. No imported product is used in the brick material, unlike pre-cast concrete blocks (imported cement).
In addition, these qualities of durability and load-bearing strength allow less steel and cement to be used in the construction of buildings. Thus, the overall cost of buildings is noticeably reduced.
An environmentally friendly product. The energy needed to bake the bricks (800° C) is produced from cotton seeds, a by-product of the Tchad cotton harvest. No coal or wood is used. The project contributes to the struggle against deforestation.
The works employs 70 people and produces 10,000 bricks per day, which are sold to companies and private individuals at competitive prices.
"Our products are very much appreciated. We cannot manage to satisfy all the demand. The brickworks, whose furnaces are never out, will be there for many years to come". Saleh SITE – Production Manager
